This advertisement from 17th century France employs a few design principles. A majority of the text is right-aligned, to balance the object (cat) on the left. The head of the cat uses symmetry in it's eyes and whiskers. The halo surrounding the cat's head also uses symmetry and layering. Layers are also simulated by the cat's tail curling over the box it sits on, blocking some text.
