Yellowjackets, Moods, and the like.

The first assignment of the new year in Visual Language is the famed "Foley Theater Jazz Series Poster Project". It is an honored tradition in the design department that classes before us have dutifully completed and subsequently excelled at.

The first phase of the project included collaboration. We each drew one of the seven bands to be featured at the Foley this Fall. I drew the "Yellowjackets", along with Abby Carr and Lillie Schenk. We started with a word list, while diving into the band's sound. The Yellowjackets are a quintet of severely talented and seasoned musicians. They fall under the sub-genre of America jazz fusion and smooth jazz. Their most recent sound leans very heavily in the smooth jazz category, with their newest album featuring several ballads.

We began by finding colors that matched the moods within the song. We felt that the great majority of their music was inherently positive and easy going, so we sought out colors to match that feel. From there we found imagery that captured those same colors.

Our final board focuses mainly on color scheme and movement, highlighting the classic and well put together sound of their music. I feel like our color choices are spot on, however we missed the fluid movement and rhythm of their sound.

The next phase, we are going back to working as individuals. We are diving head first into round two of conceptualizing!
