Juxtaposition v. Serendipity

In our individual linear safari's, we are employing a number of devices - photomontage, camera viewpoint, and cropping to name a few. While each device can be striking on its own, such as pairing a basic line study with a simply cropped photograph; it is important not to forget to try and combine all elements together simultaneously. Of course, a balance must be maintained, like the 'rule' of color schemes - a 30%, 60% 90% balance.

The Meggs reading yielded the topic most relevant to how I made my pairings - cropping. In my comparisons, I noticed several tight, highly cropped photo pairings. I believe I did this as to not overwhelm myself or the viewer. Gestalt is the ever important concept we (as artists) mustn't forget. We are simply not putting two separate images together; we are blending them.

The Speak Up article was powerful. It was a sore reminder of how 'fate' and 'random' occurrences shouldn't be taken lightly or for granted. It speaks to the importance of our Contact Sheets for our project. How that glancing around can lead to seeing something in an image you may have missed on screen. Then, pairing a study with a photo leads to something remarkable and/or beautiful.

An important phrase of the Speak Up article is the "coexistence of two worlds". It is another way of looking at our 'missions' as Designers. We must bring together aspects from all social circles into one, cohesive output. That is the very lesson Jamie has been pounding into our heads since day one. We are collectors and unifiers, all for one greater - serendipitous - cause.
